‘Hi all, I’m from the Kapiti Coast, population 56,000, which is just north of NZ’s capital, Wellington.
For years now, the government has been trying to tell us that the sea levels are rising, and that in the not-too-distant future the water is going to be lapping at our back doors, and the only option is something they call ‘managed retreat’ where we will have to move from our homes ‘for our own safety’. If we refuse, the government has drafted legislation which will give authorities ’emergency powers’ and all our services such as power, waste, and water, will be disconnected, access to roads and bridges blocked, and force applied if needed, to make us leave when they signal it’s too dangerous to live here anymore.
Our local council, Kapiti Coast District Council, is the main driver behind this, having conveniently declared a ‘climate emergency’ in 2019 followed by ‘climate emergency framework’ a couple of years later. Several years ago they established the Coastal Advisory Panel, headed by former prime minister Jim Bolger, with members including a former governor-general, Jerry Mateparae. Their scientists were cherry-picked as they followed a certain narrative, and at a cost of over NZ$5 million (which our district can’t afford, especially after a 17.5% property tax hike), they’ve produced a set of Recommendations based on the Jacobs Report (yes, a US-based weapons manufacturer amongst other things). The Report is based on faulty science. They use a measurement called RCP8.5 which even the IPCC has said is so unlikely it practically has no chance of ever happening. The Report contains other facts which are strongly disputed, yet has led to the Council placing notations on everyone’s Land Information Memorandums. And that includes folks who live several kilometers inland…….and on a hill 🙄
These notations have affected our property prices and insurance. Some can’t afford to insure their biggest asset, their homes, or their insurance companies refuse to insure them. Many are selling up and leaving the area.
To cut a long story short, this is now happening in other coastal areas of NZ, such as Westport, on the west coast of the South Island. Our govt is proposing that the WHOLE TOWN should be moved due to ‘sea level rise’. To be fair, a small percentage of coastal erosion does take place, but nothing too major. And as we know, sea level rise is a made-up lie to gain control and remove private property rights from its citizens.
Our community group, Kapiti CALM (an abbreviation of Calm Alarmist Law Madness) is actively fighting back. We have held four community meetings over the past couple of years (our last two attracted more than 400), lobbied to local and central government, and endured countless Council meetings where we have struggled to make our voices count.
