Yes we had 3.5″ here Monday followed by 6F Tuesday night in the Tri Cities, East TN. Another quarter inch of sleet this morning. Arctic air will now follow behind the front thru the weekend. Beech Mountain, just an hour east of here, can expect 3 to 5″ of snow today and temps falling to 13F this afternoon.
I have lived in Houston, TX & vicinity since 1949. I cannot recall arctic cold fronts having the extremely low ambient temperatures, this far south, And, it appears more will follow, 2024/01/19
I’m down here in TX, too, and I agree. We’ve had more “arctic blasts” in the last 4 years than I remember having in the last 30 years. Temps dipping into the low 20s Fahrenheit, sure, but temps going into the teens … multiple consecutive days? No.
So: ask the question: What do plants need to grow? you will get the answer well, water, and so on. The bombshell is: tell them the plants also need CO2 to create not only their life, but food for people. Amazement. Then tell them do not confuse CO2 with CO. If there is argument, tell them to put their car in a garage, turn the engine on, and see how long they live. There are other things you can say. But unfortunately, many people are getting to the point of being useful idiots.
I look forward to a longer range forecast for Canada. The Whitehorse(Yukon) to Yellowknife (NWT) is trending milder over the next 14 days (particularly the overnight lows). Despite the recent very cold arctic outflow, there seems to be a lot of mild air around and flowing back into Northern Canada. I appreciate all the information sharing on this, very important, site.
One thing that concerns me is that the arctic cold of -70 F in Russia will move to NW China again next week?? Isn’t it true that whenever this happens, it turns mild in the US East of the Rockies? That appears to be in the forecast next week in much of the Eastern US and Midwest. It might take awhile for the arctic air to return again. I couldn’t immediately see anything cold coming thru Jan 27 at least.
Solar flare inbound, big quakes Tonga and Marianas area N of Guam. New Guinea volcanic activity, also Vanuatu forming a cyclone NE of Oz. Cloud tops there 56k now including heavy lightning in N Oz. The cyclone off NE Oz changes the weather in Oz this week pulling cooler air up from you know where.
Heat coming up from Indo and Thailand form a Low over N Japan pulling cold air down from Russia into China, Korea and Japan bringing lots of snow for Japan. Intense high pressure area builds over Mongolia. Big low over Norway with hurricane force winds. Another big low N Pacific and four more lows in the Arctic above Russia.
More major low pressures over Greenland and -71F the cold air going into the low over Norway. Lots of snow Norway down to Poland and East from there. https://www.windy.com/-Show—add-more-layers/overlays?tcso2,-21.964,157.399,4,i:pressure,m:doRaj6v https://www.windy.com/-Show—add-more-layers/overlays?pressure,2024012218,61.681,124.095,3,i:pressure,m:eRSai41 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g6YQnHtDoN0
