Polar Blast Hits Australian Alps
Thermometers in Eastern Australia took a further step down Thursday, with the Aussie Alps posting freezing lows.
The combination of extremely dry and cold air, clear skies, and light winds overnight caused temperatures to plummet across the Australian Alps and surrounding areas.
Temperatures in the highland areas of both Victoria and New South Wales sank below -8C (17.6F), marking some of the lowest readings in years.
Mount Hotham hit a frigid -8.3C (17.1F), the lowest temperature recorded in the state of Victoria for six years. While in New South Wales, Khancoban equaled its lowest temperature in six years with a nippy -3.8C (25.2F).
Other notable minimum temperatures on Thursday included the -9C (15.8F) at Thredbo Village, the -8.9C (16F) at Cooma Airport, the -8.1C (17.4F) at Perisher Valley, the -4.5C (23.9F) at Falls Creek, and the -4.4C (24.1F) at Omeo
Despite it being too dry for natural snow, the frigid conditions created the perfect setup for snowmaking.
“With the Winter Solstice almost upon us, we’re feeling the full brunt of winter’s cold, enabling our snowmaking crews to excel in their operations,” said John Palmer, Falls Creek Ski Lift Company Mountain Operations Manager.
The Australian Alps are forecast natural snow now through Saturday as lingering polar air combines with incoming moisture.
The benchmarks continued to fall at lower elevations and all Thursday, both monthly and even all-time records. I’ve listed a handful below.

Here in Belgium we’re having the same weather pattern as on the 50’s and 60’s (Super rainy and fresh) Same thing in the North of Spain. The sea temperature is like in the 90’s when my brother and i started to take waves and we used the same winter wetsuit from october to July.
The only thing that we have to stop are the mega buildings full of concrete. The same people who “are saving the planet” with his electric devices made of plastic (scooters, e-bikes) are putting concrete everywhere. Those people who talk about “ecology” but they don’t know how to grow a potatoe, are not preserving the forest and the green areas in Brussels (for ex)They don’t respect the nature, making new paths on the forest to shortcut the distance and destroying the enviroment. …The same people are putting the heater in June because, of course, they are vaccinated and his body can’t adapt hiself to 20ºC outside and 18ºC inside and of course,they’re also living as zombies with the smartphone and computer on the hands, as in a sect, without critical think, without love, without humanity. Here in Alberta, just into summer, the daily temperature will barely reach 20C(68F).
Our government has shut down the last coal power generating station to save of from the life giving CO2. However we sell tons of coal to China where it is burned in their power generating stations. Their CO2 come wafting back to us eventually, so no diffent than ifvwe burned the coal. Does that make any sense? Uh no.
Agree down here in the states we buy solar and wind generation equipment from the Chinese. They are intelligent enough to make tried & true coal powered power plants. China wants their people to survive during the Grand Solar Minimum. Our government has created food and power insecurity.

We have had a solar flare already this morning. It was an M2.8 put out by sunspot number 3716.
I just learned that the sunspots that are going around to the backside of the sun are more dangerous than you would think, because the sun’s magnetic field curves back around toward us and particles from flares follow that curve.
I have 3 websites about the sun on my home screen now, and I’m learning something new about the sun every day. Interesting stuff!
No X flares since Mercury went by Jupiter. Mercury opposite Saturn and a New Moon on July 5th next date in line to watch for big flares. Mercury opposite Mars July 11th, then Mercury opposite Jupiter with a Full Moon on July 21st. Mercury in retrograde Aug 4th with a New Moon has most potential for big flares. Then Mercury goes by all the planets until Sept 2 going by Jupiter again with a New Moon that has lots of potential for big flares. Prime Hurricane season on that one.

At Spaceweather.com, they said sunspot 3664 is making a reappearance and is responsible for the M9.3 flare.
On Solarham, they said that flare was produced by sunspot 3723.

They do renumber spots. The sun spot is from the same polarity formation on the Sun. Same since last Summer. Round and round.
