January’s cold is about to deepen? Then why is NOAA predicting 50F for Friday? Rollercoaster weather is normal for Missouri. It goes up and it goes down and then it goes up again — all year round. Of course it’s going to get colder — it’s January. But first, it’s going to get warmer.
As long as the rest of this stinking snow/ice melts off, so I can go stock up again, I don’t care what it does. Because I know that all I have to do is be patient, and the weather will change. I’m no longer convinced the climate is changing, but I know damned well the weather will.
Hi Deb, the high temperature just before a huge cold blast is from atmospheric compression. Air heats up when compressed. The people from the north say the day before a cool down is always warmer.
Gulf of Mexico is 78F, same as Hawaii. Atlantic O off N Carolina in the Gulf Stream is 75F. 78F off SE Florida. All warmer than ave from solar flares in a normal solar maximum. Atlantic O is still warmer than ave going up past UK, past Norway up into the Arctic above Norway, If the GOM and Atlantic were cooler from no flares it would go zonal, takes a few years to dissipate the ocean heat from flares but then we get the solar wind from coronal holes which put out more heat. https://www.spaceweather.com/images2025/13jan25/coronalhole_sdo_blank.jpg https://www.swpc.noaa.gov/products/wsa-enlil-solar-wind-prediction
It most likely will be 50F on Friday 17th. Cap was highlighting the change from Saturday 18th, through to the next week. In fact, the Weather Trader substack, ( Dr Ryan Maue; he’s on your side of the pond, https://weather.substack.com/p/january-12-2025-sunday-winter-outlook) is showing exactly that.
Post back on Monday 20th, let us know if the forecast was any good! 🙂
We we did have 2 inches of snow here in Tri cities, TN on Friday, Jan10th – although I must say the air mass following this winter storm was not particularly record setting yet. The 500mb thicknesses were only about 540dm in this area behind the winter storm – so this means about 30/15 on Saturday a day after the snow. (known as cP, Continental Polar airmass) Now, it does appear that long range models are hinting of a major arctic outbreak sometime between the 18th and 23rd time frame. This one (cA, or Continental Arctic) should be able to deliver record braking cold temps to many areas East of the Rockies with more snow in the southern areas possible again. This one should be far more interesting. Bundle Up America!
Another cold front Sunday night down to Gulf of Mexico. Windy showing Kansas City Kansas at -1 F at 4am Monday morning and cold all next week. -26F in N Dakota Monday morning.
Accuweather shows Kansas City KS at 2F this Sunday and Monday mornings, MSN forecast shows 1F. Too cold to snow. Un survivable cold without heat but cold food storage not a problem. Accuweather shows 9F on Monday night the 28th. Only snow forecast is on the 23rd when it warms up to 33F.
Make your own snow with a garden hose and a nozzle like ski areas. Snow on the roof holds the heat in. Set up multiple spray patterns and make a snow cave. My Dad made us ice skate surface in the front yard with a tarp over a 2X4 frame, add water before freeze. We used to have icicles here for weeks. My Irish Kin were in Kansas pre Civil War on the way to here to work in the coal mines of E Washington where it snows 30 feet in Winter. They had a copper mine up on the mountain and ran the coal mine. https://www.ci.roslyn.wa.us/

That coronal hole is the Sun’s Northern polarity shown in red, South of the Sun’s equator., you can see the black line of delineation pushed all the way South. South polarity shown in green is still pushing North above Sun’s the equator. At solar minimum it will show red on top and green down on the bottom of the Sun at the S Pole. The black line straight across horizontal, flat line. Today’s view:

Solar minimum will look like SC23 solar minimum in Sept ’09

Ok, if I remember. The memory is going the same place my near eyesight is — away.

I hope so we’re not far enough south to get snow. I’m already sick of sweeping/shoveling.

Really deadly cold in the Cali fire area where new fires are expected from strong offshore winds. They need warm hats and mittens if you have extras.

Just don’t get to see that every day for days. Great views.
What is CET? The only one I know is Central European Time.

China bought the Canadian tar sands but there was no pipeline to get the oil out of Canada to the West Coast and onto jumbo oil tankers so they gave it back. Now they are re invested in the tar sands again with the new oil pipeline to Vancouver, eh? China backs Canada and Mexico in conflict with the Donnald and they could take US out with a few EMPs dropped from balloons, wouldn’t even hear em or see em. Just no power for a long time 95% dead in a year. Read “One Second After”. I’ve read it twice and the follow up series. Many plausible scenarios possible.
