America’s deadliest volcano enters unprecedented 72-hour tremor phase as eruption threat looms over millions
By CHRIS MELORE, US ASSISTANT SCIENCE EDITOR
“Washington’s Mount Rainier has suddenly awoken and is buzzing with almost nonstop activity for days, stoking fears that an eruption could come soon.
“This towering stratovolcano looms over more than 3.3 million people across the Seattle-Tacoma metro area, threatening to cripple entire communities with ashfall, flooding, and catastrophic mudflows if it erupts.”
–Idk what to make of this one. The assessment of the author is that an eruption is not imminent but could be building toward one, of the lahar type : “violent, fast-moving mudflows that can tear across entire communities in mere minutes. Large lahars can crush, bury, or carry away almost anything in their paths, according to the US Geological Survey (USGS).”
Wow! I just had an interesting tussle with Google’s AI! After reading the above article, I Googled “earthquakes today Mt Rainier” and the AI gave me info on an earthquake swarm there last July. Thinking it might be over, I tried “current earthquake swarm Mt Rainier ” and then “earthquakes Mt Rainier November 2025”.
The AI flatly denied, saying there are no earthquakes at Mt Rainier in November 2025. All it would give me was info on the July swarm.
So I reread the Daily Mail article and got more specific info. I Googled “Mt Rainier earthquake November 15 5am 2025”
Here’s the AI overview I got:
“Can’t generate an AI overview right now. Try again later”.
It also started posting lots of articles about the current earthquake swarm.
What was that all about? They always give you the disclaimer that AI makes mistakes. But AI also does what it’s told (maybe)…
I don’t know, Spinky. My uninformed understanding of volcanologists and what they do is they monitor any volcano that might be become active and if they see any indication, they redouble their efforts with increased monitoring and so forth. If any of that involves an antenna that might become ice laden and thus unreliable, or perhaps provide false indications…well, who knows.
Deb, I read the info as not being of a pre-volcanic activity that results in discrete seismic activity but instead an indication that magma is on the move, and a lot of it. A churning that could amount to something or could not.
“Unlike the seismic activity tied to major earthquakes, the patterns being seen in Washington look more like a volcanic tremor, a type of nonstop hum or roar that begins when magma, hot water, and gas move around inside a volcano.”
I imagine volcanoes routinely wake up a bit, like a sleeper changing position, then go quiet again.
Beats me, but I was surprised by the avoidance behavior by the AI. My son caused a cellphone AI to freeze up by pinning it down with ever more pointed questions.
Does anyone remember the Star Trek episode where Kirk, Spock and some other crew members froze up a bunch of robots by messing with their heads?

whoops, I omitted the link to the above article–

Could it be due to rime ice buildup on the antenna at Mt. Rainier?

I guess if you all are AI, that question was in bad taste. Apologies. 😒
