It might also be dangerous to live in places like Buenos Aires, near the center of the South Atlantic Anomaly, where increasing UV and cosmic ray ray radiation will be reaching Earth.

The only way I could stockpile fuel is with kerosene/paraffin and a suitable stove that wouldn’t be a serious risk due to carbon monoxide poisoning unless I had the windows wide open which rather defeats the point of having a heat source.
If a massive power surge knocks out a lot of the grid then presumably it’ll damage a lot of electronics that are connected when the surge occurs. If this destroys the computers that every company and bank uses people won’t be able to access their money so how can they buy food? Even though all the data will be backed up if the computers are burnt to a crisp this isn’t going to help. Once people start going hungry societal collapse is only a couple of days away and without phones or internet there’s no way of the authorities coordinating help to ensure everyone has access to food without looting.
Try a propane heater for short term and of course wood heat for long term. The question is, how determined are you to provide for yourself? Don’t have a wood burner or the ability to install one? Pay someone else to do it.
People whine they can’t afford it, but then they get a big screen TV or the latest cell phone, Internet service. It’s a matter of priorities for a lot of people. I have a wood stove, but I do not have a TV, a computer or an internet bill every month.
