a year ago no-one would talk about sub synchronous interaction (SSI) in widespread generation systems. Now it’s come back to bite the renewables camp big time.
The fact is that without a very solid base load generator to control voltage and frequency a grid which depends on thousands of inputs based on phase locked loop tracking of the grid will never be stable!
and that is without the effects of sub synchronous torsional interaction where wind turbines create damaging harmonics which can mechanically overload the turbine gearboxes and shafts.
